Bulk Edible Oil Packaging: Choosing the Right Option

The packaging format you choose for bulk edible oil imports significantly affects your total landed cost, product quality on arrival, and logistics complexity. This guide compares the main packaging options available from a wholesale edible oil supplier and helps you choose the right format for your needs.

Flexitank

A flexitank is a large, single-use flexible bladder installed inside a standard 20-foot dry container, typically holding 16,000–24,000 litres (approximately 14–22 metric tonnes) of liquid.

Advantages:

  • Lower cost than ISO tanks (no return freight)
  • Widely available globally
  • Suitable for most refined edible oils
  • Easy to source and book

Disadvantages:

  • Single-use (generates plastic waste)
  • Not suitable for high-temperature products
  • Risk of leakage if not properly installed
  • Not reusable

Best for: Refined sunflower oil, soybean oil, and other food-grade oils for buyers importing 14–22 MT per shipment.

ISO Tank Container

An ISO tank is a stainless steel tank mounted in a standard ISO frame, typically holding 20,000–26,000 litres. It is reusable and can be used for multiple shipments.

Advantages:

  • Reusable (lower environmental impact)
  • Excellent product protection
  • Suitable for temperature-sensitive products
  • Widely accepted at ports globally

Disadvantages:

  • Higher per-shipment cost (includes return freight)
  • Requires cleaning between products
  • Availability can be limited in some regions

Best for: High-value oils, temperature-sensitive products, or buyers with established return logistics.

Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC)

An IBC is a rigid or semi-rigid container typically holding 1,000 litres (approximately 900 kg of edible oil), mounted on a pallet.

Advantages:

  • Convenient for medium-volume buyers
  • Easy to handle with a forklift
  • Can be used for direct dispensing
  • Available in food-grade versions

Disadvantages:

  • Higher cost per tonne than flexitank or ISO tank
  • More packaging waste per tonne

Best for: Food manufacturers, distributors, and buyers needing 1–10 MT per delivery.

Drums (200 L)

Steel or plastic drums holding approximately 180 kg of edible oil.

Advantages:

  • Convenient for small quantities
  • Easy to handle and store
  • Widely available globally

Disadvantages:

  • Highest cost per tonne
  • Labour-intensive to handle at scale

Best for: Small buyers, specialty products, or markets with limited bulk handling infrastructure.

Conclusion

For most bulk edible oil importers, flexitanks offer the best combination of cost and convenience for shipments of 14–22 MT. For larger volumes, ISO tanks or vessel bulk shipments are more economical. ASHER 8 LLC supplies bulk vegetable oil in all packaging formats to suit your specific logistics requirements.
